Puppies born 5/1/14

"Jewels of the Nile" litter

Jewel was 2 days overdue when we decided on a C section. It was a wise choice. The little boy would have been too big to pass easily and he was choking off his little tiny sister. If we had waited any longer she would not of made it according to the vet. She was blue by the time they got her out.  We had to do a lot of hand feeding to keep her going. In the picture below you can see she is only 1/2 the size of her brother, Aswan.

This is our Jewels of the Nile litter and the little boy is called Aswan for Allagante Jewel of Aswan and the little gril is called Cairo for Allagante Jewel of Cairo.

At Week 1 you can see they are finally growing. Loving brother and sister.

Boy - Allagante Jewel of Aswan

Aswan has to be one the happiest puppies I have ever seen. We are taken with the outgoingness and gentleness of this little guy. His sister was born with some issues as described below and he takes the best care of her. You can find them sleeping with his arm around her.

Girl - Allagante Jewel of Cairo

Cairo was born during the C section and was jammed up into the horn with little nutrition and was born blue and steps were taken by the vet to make sure she lived. She came home to us with this large head and small body and very odd looking little girl. For the first couple of week The actions were not normal. She had a hard time holding the large head upright and it bobbled all the time as if too big for her to hold up. It was hard for her to nurse the first week. I was making the hard choice if I was going to put her down but a friend of mine found an article of this problem. Human children have it. Basically if not a lot of nutrition is giving to one of the pups it will send all the nutrition to the brain and the body gets only enough to survive. With the larger head it will be "bobbled headed" They said at even 5 or 6 weeks you can still tell but by 8 to 10 weeks the puppy is perfectly normal with no genetic or health issues. I had never heard of this but I wanted to give the pup a chance. Well it has been an amazing transformation in the last couple of weeks. Her head is still slightly big at 5 weeks but all the unsteadiness is gone and she is starting to act like any normal pup by beating up on her brother. Although I would never breed this pup I am soooo glad I waited to see if the article was right. She will end up in a loving pet home that will take such great care of her and she will live a normal life. Thank goodness for the internet and the people willing to put information out there and the people who helped me by researching it. This happens in humans as well as most species. It is called IUGR.
